Before and After

The Before and After pictures below are all patients of Dr. Glenski

This beautiful young lady grew up to be a beautiful young woman, as seen here in an after picture taken 10 years after she received her veneers. Originally her teeth were too small and she was destined to have large gaps between her teeth simply because pulling her tiny teeth together would have caused bigger problems. But, problem solved, she received several all-porcelain veneers and to date she is still the lovely lady you see here.

This unfortunate patient suffered from an all too common problem, discolored teeth. This is brought on by several factors, Genetics, staining drinks and foods such as coffee and red wine, drugs – the worst of which is Tetracycline, and neglect. Here dental veneers were used to create a natural white smile with the added benefit of increasing the size of her teeth, which were slightly small.

Properly prepared, sculpted and cemented porcelain veneers and crowns require a degree of expertise and artistry. The patient’s complexion, mouth and jaw shape, biting surface and habits must be taken into account in order to create a smile that looks completely natural, but is also durable and comfortable.

The staining you see here is compounded by the shortness of the front teeth, which reveals the lower teeth excessively tipped in. There were several problems to address here for a young lady in her early 20′s who worked in a sales position. Sometimes straightening the teeth with Viazi Fast Braces creates a more healthy bite and helps to ensure the patient will be able to keep her teeth for many, many years. Also, there are times when Tooth Whitening is recommended before restorations (veneers and crowns) are made. We want to make sure your teeth look their best, so the restorations must match your natural teeth exactly. If a patient gets veneers or crowns and THEN whitens her teeth, the natural teeth will lighten in shade, but the restorations will remain exactly the same shade. So it is important to whiten first so the restorations look their best.

Good enough just wasn’t good enough for this lovely young lady. This is one of the few situations when a “Hollywood Smile” is appropriate and looks perfectly natural. Natural looking teeth usually have some variances. Often they are not white-white-white. What looks natural on one face looks completely manufactured on another. We don’t want anyone coming up to our patients and saying, “Wow! Nice dental work!” No, what we want is, “You look great! Have you lost weight? Do you have a new boyfriend?” I’ve been told, “you’ve never seen a good toupee” True, if it was good, you thought it was natural hair. It is the same with artistic dental work that takes every detail into consideration. You’ve never seen a good veneer, crown or bridge.

This patient was flabbergasted by the remarkable change in her stained, misshapen teeth. She told me that it took about 3 months for her to break her habit of holding her upper lip down, a habit she had created as a teenager to cover her ugly front teeth when she smiled. 3 months later she had retrained herself to smile broadly for friends or for the camera, and she said she felt so much more outgoing. She had never realized fully just how much her ugly teeth had affected her self confidence.

Here is an excellent example of a beautiful smile that is not nearly so white. With this patient’s complexion and age, very white teeth would have been an obvious sign that her teeth were “fake.” However, with Doctor Glenski’s guidance, the patient opted for a slightly less dramatic white and ended up with a fully natural looking smile that does not look fake in the slightest.

This is what Tetracycline staining looks like. Tetracycline is an antibiotic that creates dark purplish stains on the teeth. This darkness will show through standard veneers unless the teeth and prepared properly and the materials used are correct. Dr. Glenski uses a special technique to ensure the darkness of the natural tooth underneath the restoration (veneer or crown) does not “bleed through” and darken the restoration. As you can see here, the stains are totally absent in the after picture. A remarkable difference, as this young man would be happy to tell you.

Chipped and broken teeth can be repaired using Direct Resin Bonding or Porcelain Veneers. Dr. Glenski will be happy to inform you of your options and the advantages and disadvantages of each. Direct resin bonding is less expensive than a porcelain veneer, but the bonding discolors over time and has to be redone. Porcelain never changes color. Coffee, tea, red wine, etc. do not have any effect on porcelain, which is why it is chosen 90% over bonding. This patient chose bonding and as you can see, the restoration is nearly invisible. Again, artistry and meticulous attention to detail are required in a dentist to achieve this quality of restoration. He will have to return in 4 to 5 years to have this resin replaced.

This young lady’s teeth were pretty badly damaged from neglect.  Unfortunately too often a patient loses back teeth and doesn’t realize how important they are to the health of the front teeth.  The extra stress on this patient’s front teeth caused them to begin to shatter and break.  Luckily Dr. Edilia was able to restore function to the back teeth and then give this young lady a bright new smile.

Front teeth are by far the most important and most complicated from a cosmetic point of view.  There are a variety of factors to consider including size, shape, color and symmetry in order to get the most natural looking result.  Dr. Edilia is an expert at artistically crafting restorations to make them look as good as, or in most cases more “natural” than natural teeth!
