While Traditional General Dentistry focused on oral hygiene and preventing, diagnosing and treating oral disease, it now also covers cosmetic dentistry which focuses on improving the appearance of a person’s teeth, mouth and smile.
Fillings which used to be mainly composed of silver amalgam have been replaced by porcelain and other tooth colored materials. These fillings more effectively restore not only the function but the original appearance of the tooth.
Although most General Dentists are leaning more towards cosmetic techniques, not all general dentists have been certified by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry after having done a rigorous training and have demonstrated their artistic skill through a rigorous credentialing process.
